This study examines code switching and code mixing as communication strategies used by Generation Z in digital media, particularly in utterances found in YouTube podcast videos on the Suara Berkelas channel. The development of digital technology and the intensity of interaction in virtual spaces encourage Generation Z to use language flexibly by combining various linguistic elements according to communicative contexts. This study aims to describe the communication strategies realized through the use of code switching and code mixing, as well as the factors underlying their occurrence in podcast conversations. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with content analysis techniques. Data were collected through an observational method using non-participatory observation, note-taking, and transcription of utterances in podcast videos. Data analysis was conducted by identifying and describing communication strategies and the factors causing code switching and code mixing based on sociolinguistic theory. The findings show that three communication strategies were identified, namely emphasizing social closeness, demonstrating bilingual competence, and representing a modern and global identity. In addition, the use of code switching and code mixing is influenced by three main factors: the speaker’s linguistic competence, the topic of conversation, and the characteristics of the audience or interlocutors. Thus, code switching and code mixing function as communication strategies used by Generation Z to adapt to the dynamics of digital communication.
