This study aims to analyse the text of the newspaper article ‘The PKI’s Current Assessment of the Centrists’ by Soe Hok Gie using Jürgen Habermas’s theory of intellectual criticism. The method employed is historical research using a qualitative approach. The research findings indicate that Gie’s criticism represents a communicative act that upholds the rational public sphere amidst the dominance of the Guided Democracy ideology, through three dimensions: substantive criticism of the PKI’s discourse monopoly, the use of Mingguan Mahasiswa Indonesia as an alternative channel, and the state’s response in the form of political polarisation that curtails intellectual freedom. Gie’s writings demonstrate that the colonisation of the public sphere during the Guided Democracy era was institutionalised through regulations that systematically reduced intellectual pluralism.

Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis teks artikel koran "Penilaian PKI Sekarang terhadap Kaum Tengah" karya Soe Hok Gie menggunakan teori kritik intelektual Jurgen Habermas. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian sejarah dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kritik Gie merepresentasikan tindakan komunikatif yang mempertahankan ruang publik rasional di tengah dominasi ideologi Demokrasi Terpimpin, melalui tiga dimensi: kritik substantif terhadap monopoli wacana PKI, penggunaan Mingguan Mahasiswa Indonesia sebagai saluran alternatif, serta respons negara berupa polarisasi politik yang mengekang kebebasan intelektual. Tulisan Gie membuktikan bahwa kolonisasi ruang publik pada era Demokrasi Terpimpin dilembagakan melalui regulasi yang secara sistemis mereduksi pluralisme intelektual.
