MYTHS OF SECURITY AND LIFE COMFORT IN THE POEM KEPADA UANG BY JOKO PINURBO: A ROLAND BARTHES SEMIOTIC STUDY

This study aims to describe the representation of money in the poem Kepada Uang by Joko Pinurbo through Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The research focuses on the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth to reveal the social and ideological meanings contained in the poem. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques through library research and textual analysis of diction, symbols, and imagery in the poem. The results show that money in the poem is not merely interpreted as an economic transaction tool, but also represented as a symbol of life security, emotional comfort, bodily well-being, and the continuity of modern human existence. At the denotative level, the poem presents images of houses, bodies, beds, twilight, and childhood as representations of the lyrical subject’s simple life. At the connotative level, these symbols develop meanings related to protection, life struggles, nostalgia, and human vulnerability. Meanwhile, at the myth level, the poem reflects the social construction of modern society that positions money as a determinant of security, comfort, and human dignity. This study concludes that the poem Kepada Uang contains a subtle social criticism of modern life, where humans depend on economic sufficiency to achieve peace and stability. Through the symbols of home, body, and childhood nostalgia, Joko Pinurbo portrays how the relationship between humans and money has entered emotional and existential dimensions. This study is expected to contribute to the development of contemporary Indonesian literary semiotics and serve as a reference for understanding social and ideological meanings in literary works.

THE MEANING OF REGRET AND LIFE VALUES IN MENYESAL BY ALI HASJMY: AN ANALYSIS OF ROLAND BARTHES' FIVE SEMIOTIC CODES

Previous studies on the poem Menyesal by Ali Hasjmy have primarily focused on its intrinsic elements and moral messages. However, comprehensive studies employing Roland Barthes' five semiotic codes to reveal the multilayered meanings embedded in the poem remain limited. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the meanings of Menyesal through Barthes' five semiotic codes, namely the actional code, hermeneutic code, cultural code, connotative code, and symbolic code. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The data consisted of the verses of the poem Menyesal, which were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the poem embodies Barthes' five semiotic codes, which collectively construct its overall meaning. The actional code portrays the lyrical subject's negligence in making productive use of youth, ultimately leading to regret. The hermeneutic code presents interpretative questions concerning the causes and consequences of life choices. The cultural code reflects social values emphasizing the importance of education, hard work, responsibility, and dedication to society. Furthermore, the connotative code assigns deeper meanings to symbols such as morning, evening, knowledge, and wealth, while the symbolic code establishes binary oppositions between youth and old age, hope and regret, as well as productivity and passivity. These findings demonstrate that the poem conveys not only the poet's personal experience but also universal moral reflections on the importance of valuing time and making meaningful life choices. This study concludes that Roland Barthes' semiotic framework effectively reveals the multiple layers of meaning embedded in the poem through the interrelationship of the five semiotic codes. The analysis demonstrates that Menyesal presents philosophical reflections on life, regret, responsibility, and self-devotion that remain relevant to contemporary society. Therefore, this study contributes to the development of Indonesian literary semiotics and provides a valuable reference for future research on semiotic analyses of literary works.

THE STYLISTIC STRATEGIES OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE AND IMAGERY IN CONSTRUCTING THE MEANING OF LONGING IN HALINU NA MERIDU NARI DI TUNDUNMU BY GUSTI PRIDA GUMALA

Poetry is a literary genre that employs linguistic elements to construct aesthetic value while expressing the poet's inner experiences. Although stylistic studies on poetry have been widely conducted, research examining the relationship between figurative language and imagery as fundamental elements in constructing meaning and aesthetic effects in Lampung poetry remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to describe the use of figurative language and imagery in Halinu Na Meridu Nari di Tundunmu by Gusti Prida Gumala through a stylistic approach.  This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using a stylistic approach. The data consisted of the verses of Halinu Na Meridu Nari di Tundunmu by Gusti Prida Gumala. Data were collected through close reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed by identifying, classifying, interpreting, and describing stylistic elements, particularly figurative language and imagery.  The findings reveal that the poem employs three types of figurative language—metaphor, personification, and hyperbole—and five types of imagery, namely visual, auditory, olfactory, kinesthetic, and tactile imagery. Metaphors are used to express longing and memories imaginatively, personification animates abstract entities to evoke emotional nuances, while hyperbole intensifies the lyrical speaker's emotions. Furthermore, the various forms of imagery create vivid sensory experiences, enabling readers to visualize, hear, smell, feel, and emotionally experience the events portrayed in the poem. The study demonstrates that the integration of figurative language and imagery not only enhances the poem's aesthetic quality but also functions as a stylistic strategy for constructing meaning, reinforcing the expression of longing, and creating profound aesthetic experiences for readers.

FROM DENOTATION TO MYTH: CONSTRUCTING DEATH AND HUMAN MORALITY IN FRIDOLIN UKUR'S THE ONE WHO LEAVES AND THE ONE WHO STAYS

This study aims to examine the construction of the meanings of death and human morality in Fridolin Ukur's poem The One Who Leaves and The One Who Stays using Roland Barthes' semiotic framework. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzes poetic expressions through three levels of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. The findings reveal that, at the denotative level, the poem depicts the existential realities of life and death as inseparable dimensions of human existence. At the connotative level, the signs construct meanings associated with life's journey, worldly temptations, spiritual awareness, and moral struggles experienced by human beings. At the mythic level, the poem reproduces cultural and ideological beliefs that portray life as a moral test shaped by material desires, while death is represented as both liberation from worldly suffering and the inevitable consequence of human choices. These findings demonstrate that the poem constructs layered meanings through the interaction of linguistic signs, cultural experiences, and ideological values, thereby presenting a critical reflection on the tension between worldly pursuits and spiritual consciousness. This study contributes to literary semiotics by demonstrating how Barthes' concepts of denotation, connotation, and myth can uncover the ideological dimensions embedded in poetic discourse, particularly in representing death and human morality.

CONSTRUCTING THE MEANING OF LIFE IN LAMPUNG BUBANDUNG THROUGH THE SIGNIFIER–SIGNIFIED RELATIONSHIP: A FERDINAND DE SAUSSURE SEMIOTIC STUDY

Bubandung is a form of Lampung oral literature that embodies religious, moral, and cultural values passed down across generations. As an oral literary tradition, Bubandung employs a system of signs to convey philosophical messages about human life, making it a valuable subject for semiotic analysis. This study aims to describe the relationship between the signifier and the signified in Bubandung using Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic theory and to reveal the meanings constructed through this relationship. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data source was the text of Bubandung, collected through a literature study. Data were gathered using documentation techniques by conducting intensive readings, identifying linguistic units containing signs, and analyzing them based on the relationship between signifier and signified according to Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic framework.  The findings indicate that each stanza of Bubandung forms an interconnected system of signs representing the journey of human life, the inevitability of death, the importance of maintaining a relationship with God, and the awareness that wealth, social status, and worldly pleasures are temporary. The relationship between signifier and signified constructs a coherent meaning, demonstrating that Bubandung functions not only as entertainment but also as a medium for transmitting the religious, moral, and cultural values of the Lampung community. These findings confirm that Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic approach effectively reveals the structure of meaning embedded in oral literature as a representation of a community's worldview.
