THE SYMBOLIC MEANING IN THE SHORT STORY "ANAK KEBANGGAAN" BY A.A NAVIS THROUGH A SEMIOTIC APPROACH

This study analyzes the symbolic meaning of the short story Anak Kebanggaan by A. A. Navis and concentrates on how symbols implicitly construct social critiques related to family values and societal expectations. The main focus of this study is that semiotic research is still limited and does not provide an in-depth analysis of the symbol structures present in the text. The purpose of this study is to identify various kinds of symbols, study how signs interact with each other, and interpret their meanings in social and cultural contexts. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a semiotic approach. Ferdinand de Saussure's dyadic and Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic models are integrated into this approach. Signifiers, signifieds, icons, indices, and symbols are classified after data collection through reading and note-taking techniques. The results show that the main symbols such as characters, actions, and situations in the story represent parental pride, social pressure, and moral contradictions. The layered meanings that emerge from these symbols reflect critiques of societal norms and the illusion of pride embedded in the family structure.

THE ROLE OF RELIGION AND GENDER AS A TOOL OF SOCIAL CONTROL IN TUHAN, IZINKAN AKU BERDOSA (2023)

This study analyzes the discussion of religion, gender, and power in Hanung Bramantyo's Tuhan, Izinkan Aku Berdosa (2023).  The aim is to examine how religion and gender bias shape and exercise power over women, particularly through the character Kiran.  A descriptive qualitative research method is used, with data obtained from analyzing selected movie scenes and literature review.  Foucault's theory of power, which emphasizes the role of discourse and institutions in exercising power, and Millett's theory of sexual politics, which discusses men's dominance in the public and private space, serve as the analytical framework.  In conclusion, religion in this film is not neutral, but legitimizes control over women's bodies, voices and morality.  Kirani's journey from religious woman to commercial sex worker represents resistance to a repressive system and criticizes the hypocrisy of social and religious morality that discriminates against women.

LIVING WITHIN A PANOPTICON: THE TRUMAN SHOW’S SURVEILLANCE, POWER, AND EXPLOITATION

This study explores The Truman Show (1998) through the lens of Michel Foucault’s theory of panopticism to understand how surveillance functions as a form of control and exploitation in contemporary media. By employing a qualitative descriptive method with textual analysis, the research investigates how Truman’s life, embedded within a reality television setting, exemplifies the normalization of surveillance. The film reflects real-world parallels such as social media’s invisible influence and celebrity exploitation, notably Britney Spears’ conservatorship. Through selected scenes, the study identifies mechanisms of control ranging from spatial boundaries and routine normalization to emotional manipulation and audience complicity. Findings reveal how surveillance extends beyond external observation and becomes internalized, shaping identity and behavior. Ultimately, The Truman Show portrays a critical view of entertainment media’s capacity to commodify human life and violate individual autonomy under the guise of entertainment. This paper contributes to the discourse on media ethics, human rights, and the ethical implications of surveillance in digital culture.

POLITENESS VIOLATIONS IN NETIZENS’ UTTERANCES IN THE COMMENT SECTION OF FACEBOOK REELS

This study aims to (1) analyze politeness violations in netizens’ utterances in the comment section of Facebook Reels and (2) explain the types of utterances in maxims that violate politeness. The research employed a pragmatic and qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected using the listening method with tapping, reading, and note-taking techniques, and analyzed through a pragmatic equivalent method with both basic and advanced techniques. The findings reveal two main points: (1) the existence of politeness violations in netizens’ utterances, and (2) the types of utterances associated with maxim violations. Violations were identified in five maxims: tact, generosity, modesty, approbation, and agreement. The utterances consisted of commissive, representative, perlocutionary, directive, locutionary, illocutionary, and expressive forms. Out of 120 utterances, 116 were found to violate politeness, including 19 violating the tact maxim, 8 the generosity maxim, 27 the modesty maxim, 42 the approbation maxim, and 20 the agreement maxim. The most frequently violated maxim was approbation, with 42 utterances (36.20%). The utterance types within this maxim included perlocutionary, directive, representative, and expressive forms.
